Hi, As some of you know, the PSP recommendation that affects us most is to stop repeating every failed OB until the PIs can evaluate the data and to see if some fraction of the data can be used and won't need to be repeated. The implication is that we need to put in place clear rules about that, so the TIOs can follow them. Affected surveys - it loks like all but VMC. Some considerations for the repeate-or-not-repeat rules: - the biggest imact is on VHS and VVV - for them 15-25% of the OBs are repeated; since VVV ended its active season, we should apply the new policy on VHS ASAP - the rules must be discussed with the PIs, so we should just come up with a dratf proposal to be discussed - draft rules: --- for all programs: if during the execution of an OB the conditions degrade to apoint that the OB will be graded C, and there is an OB that would b graded A or B for the same conditions, then abort the on-goign OB, and switch to the one that would be graded A or B; the idea here is not to waste time on an OB that would fail and will have to be repeated; on the other hand this may encourage the TIOs no to purcu the more difficult OBs, and the implementation if this rule depends a lot on the pipeline server upgrade (because of he large backlog that piles up during the execution of Ultra-VISTA and VVV) --- for VHS (and may be VIDEO VIKING) OBs: if one filter is completed within the constraints for grades A or B, we should not repeat the OB; we shpould give the OB a D (Do Not Repeat) grade. --- for VVV concatenations: if at least two OBs from a variability concatenation are classified A or B, then do not repeat the concatenation. question: what will happend with the automatic OB reclassification - i.e. what does the OT3 do if an OB from a concatenation is graded D? A finer point - the sky subtractio doens't care for the ellipticity and seeing, so in effect, if only one OBs is graded A or B, and another OB for the VVV is executed within 10-15 min, this should be enough to reduce the "good" OB. --- the cases when OBs are executed as fillers with 20% tolerance from the constrains, are not considered - they should be graded C as now. V. ==========> FINAL <========== Preliminary Agenda for the VISTA IOT on Oct 22, 2012 ==================================================== (9-10 Chile, 13-14 UK, 14-15 Garching) 1. VIRCAM/VISTA general technical status, planned activities, PPRS review, data releases, improvements (TSz, VDI, MAr) - eficiency (VDI,TSz) - find bellow my table with fractions, and I am attachng a PDF of the PSP presentation of Thomas - AO/AG issues (TSz) - the new pipeline server (VDI) - etc 2. Survey progres rate, correcting measures for improvement (MRe, MHi, TSz, VDI, etc) discussion of the new procedure for not repeating OBs right on the spot, until the PIs can evaluate the data quality and assess what part of the data is useful and doesn't have to be repeated 3. Software (SADT/OT/P2PP/etc) issues (MRe, MHi, JEm) - the min rejection distance - no AG on later pawprints - etc 4. VIRCAM pipeline upgrade (MNe) 5. QC and data reduciton issues (WHu, MIr) 6. Action Items review (enclosed bellow is the open AIs from the last IOT) 7. Other issues 8. Date of the next meeting, proposed early-Mar 2013, after the E-ELT Science and Instrumentation meeting in Garching which many of us are likely attend ************************************************************ ====================== 5. Action Items review ====================== -------- OLD AIs: -------- AI 2011-07: MHi to prepare test OBs with the new SADT; SMi to execute them 2012-06-22: this was from the last IOT at the end of 2011; it is still pending STATUS: PENDING ** -------- NEW AIs: -------- AI 2012-01: TSz to follow up the pipeline server test/purchase; this is created only as a reminder (2012-06-22) AI 2012-02: VISTA pointing model, to be coordinated with the Paranal Shift Coordinator by GCa (2012-06-22) AI 2012-03: VDI to send to the Survey Team mailing list the updated rules of the VVV execution as received by MRe (2012-06-22) ************************************************************ - efficiency study: the NLT statistics is shown bellow for VISTA, VST and UT2. It is hard to interpret it since the telescopes have different number of instruments, so I will limit to VISTA and VST. If the outliers are removed, the typical technical downtime of VISTA is 2-7%, and for VST it is 1-5%. There is a weak downward tendency with VISTA, except for the last month - due to a more frequent occurrence of the ellipticity problem. UT2 has ~2-3% of technical downtime, but in case of a problem they can change instruments. Also, in most cases the technical downtime for VISTA and VST is due to the telescopes, not the instruments. UT2 benefits from >10 hrs of UT operation that has flushed out most problems. ================================================================================================================================= - Date - ------------------------- VISTA --------------------------- --------------------------- VST ---------------------------- ---------- Times ---------- - Losses - --- Fractions % ---- ---------- Times ---------- -- Losses - --- Fractions % ---- Science Commiss.
