From nch@roe.ac.uk Fri Jan 8 16:20:30 2010 Date: Fri, 8 Jan 2010 14:58:57 +0000 (GMT) From: Nigel Hambly To: WFCAM Science Archive Team -- Eckhard Sutorius , Mike Read , Mark Holliman , Nigel Hambly , Nicholas Cross , Rob Blake , Ross Collins Cc: CCs for WSA weekly meeting minutes distribution -- Andrew Lawrence , Andy Adamson , Jim Emerson , Malcolm Stewart , Lorenzo Rimoldini , Mike Irwin , Peredur Williams , Bob Mann , Stephen Warren Subject: WFAU VDFS Science Archives weekly project meeting minutes, 8/1/10 Minutes of WFAU VDFS Science Archive meeting: January 8th 2009 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Present: NCH, ETWS, PMW, RPB, MSH, RGM Apologies: JPE, JMS, PMW, RSC, AL, MAR, NJC DoNM: 10am, Friday January 15th 2010 in the VISTA Hut Actions discharged this week: ----------------------------- None this week Actions partly discharged but continuing: ----------------------------------------- None this week Actions carried forward from 18/12/09 meeting: ---------------------------------------------- None this week Specific points and new actions: -------------------------------- Project management: PMW asked the team to fill in the progress charts for December; NCH noted that the 2010 Q1 plan needs fleshed out. ACTION: PMW and NCH to meet on Monday 12pm to flesh out the 2010 Q1 plan RGM noted that now would be a good time to discuss further ideas for VISTA added-value services for the ESO community as a whole. ACTION: All interested parties (RGM, NCH, PMW, NJC, MAR, AL) to meet on Wednesday 13th at 2pm to discuss a plan of action for VSA added-value services. ACTION: PMW to book the Vista Hut meeting room for Wed 13th at 2pm. MSH noted that he'll add a couple more ideas to the TWiki topic on this subject before the meeting. NCH noted that some email exchanges with JPE immediately before Xmas concerning VISTA SV/dry-run proprietary rights, and general issues that are arising concerning the data (see below) all point to the need for reconvening VDMT; JPE has done so and the next is TBC sometime between 12th-18th Jan (thanks!) WFCAM & VISTA updates: MJI has circulated a draft agenda for the PSPI meeting at IoA with the VISTA PSPIs. It includes (item 4) space for VSA discussions, and the suggestion is that the following presentations are made: 4. The VISTA Science Archive in Edinburgh - WFAU -o- General catalogue science requirements - N. Cross - e.g. table schema & detailed attribute specs -o- Operational requirements - E. Sutorius - e.g. flat file access issues; ESO-SAF interface; release frequency -o- User Interface & Q.C. requirements - M. Read - e.g. requirements on PI for QC input; possible added-value services So attendees from WFAU will be NJC, ETWS and MAR (and possibly NCH on the 28th). Comments and issues arising from CASU minutes: The team noted the minutes of the meeting of 23/12/09. There were a few comments and resulting actions: ACTION: ETWS to communicate directly with MJI over the exact contents and versioning of the latest batch of VISTA data WFAU note CASU's next stage of production and release of tile-level band-merged catalogues and deep stacks for NGC253, and wonder if the clear distinction between WFCAM nightly pipeline-processing at CASU and DB-driven product production at WFAU is not so clear-cut for routine VISTA processing (or maybe this is just for SV and shakedown of the software)? Anyway, something for discussion at the next VDMT. Networking: Nothing of note this week WSA/VSA Operations: RPB noted: "GPS DR6 released as of this morning. I put it live yesterday and MAR checked everything was working. There is now an announcement of the fact on the WSA home page. Calibration release ready to go, hopefully next week once a data release naming scheme is decided upon and the user interface tweaks have been made. WSA database has been reduced from a four volume database to a three volume database to batter match the physical disk layout of the cluster." ETWS noted: - Normal operation of the WSA are going ahead for DR7. CU4 has processed catalogues for April and May. - Created a new set of Browser pages for DR6. Hardware and Systems: MSH noted that khafre now has an upgraded OS, and that infiniband cards have been ordered for ramses9 (was hatshepsut) and menkaure. MSH asked if we're currently OK for pixel file mass storage space: ACTION: RPB/ETWS to check free space for mass file store and liaise with PMW/MSH if another NAS box needs ordering. Software: Nothing of note this week. Survey Data Release: As noted above, RPB, MAR and ETWS have appended the GPS to UKIDSS DR6 and will announce the release once the web docs are updated appropriately. Non-survey Data Release: Again, as noted above, the calibration catalogue DB release is ready and it's release will be announced next week - some concerns over a future-proof but user-friendly naming scheme for this, but the suggestion emerged to synchronize with whatever the associated UKIDSS release number is given the data range of the constituent data, so presumably this time it will be calibration DR5 (or maybe 6?! Can't remember exactly what's in it). Astrogrid deployment & Data Analysis services: MSH noted that he's produced a workaround cludge to make the current DSA software a little more stable (it's been prone to crashes since the last update). Miscellaneous: JPE has emailed around noting that he is organising a NAM 2010 (Glasgow, April 12-16) parallel session on Vista. The WFAU team intend to go mob-handed. http://www.astro.gla.ac.uk/nam2010 ============================================================= Nigel Hambly Tel: +44-131-668-8234 Institute for Astronomy Fax: +44-131-668-8416 School of Physics and Astronomy University of Edinburgh Email: nch@roe.ac.uk Royal Observatory Blackford Hill Edinburgh EH9 3HJ The University of Edinburgh is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336. =============================================================
