From nch@roe.ac.uk Fri Jan 14 17:23:55 2005 Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2005 12:49:56 +0000 (GMT) From: Nigel Hambly To: WFCAM Science Archive Team -- Eckhard Sutorius , Mike Read , Nigel Hambly , Nicholas Cross , Bob Mann Cc: CCs for WSA weekly meeting minutes distribution -- Andrew Lawrence , Andy Adamson , Peter Shillan , John Taylor , Jim Emerson , Malcolm Stewart , Martin Hill , Mike Irwin , Peredur Williams Subject: WFAU WSA weekly meeting minutes, 14th January 2005 Minutes of WFCAM Science Archive meeting: 14th January 2005 ------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- Present: NCH, PMW, ETWS, JDT, JMS, NJC, RGM Apologies: MCH, AL, GPS, JPE, MAR DONM: 10am, Friday 21th January 2005, plate library Actions discharged: ------------------- ACTION: NCH to remember to action a team programmer to implement range checking in the low-level ingest codes. Discharged: NJC is beginning work on this. ACTION: NCH, ETWS and NJC to meet 2pm in the Plate Library today to discuss the software work and assign various tasks. Discharged: meeting held and priorities assigned for remaining V2/3 work; have been incorporated into the forward plan (see below) Actions partly discharged but continuing: ----------------------------------------- ACTION: MAR to check out SQL Server networked server functionality for cross-server querying. Continues; NCH suggested we should do some experiments with the linked SQL Servers ahmose & amenhotep once the dust has settled on their reorganisation over the next couple of weeks. ACTION: ETWS to put (or link) ACD's network document on the WSA TWiki. Continues: ETWS has added a paragraph to this and awaiting issue of the finished document from ACD. - continuing; thanks for progressing these. Actions carried forward from 7/01/04 meeting: ---------------------------------------------- ACTION: NCH to remind MAR to send JPE the VISTA ETC code that is deployed on the VSC pages. Continues: MAR still on leave (returns at the end of next week). - CONTINUES. Specific points and new actions: -------------------------------- Project management: PMW noted that the VEGA award has now been announced; all monies applied for have been awarded. This means that certain contracts can now be extended to the end of the VEGA/VDFS project period (Q3 2007). NCH has started work on revising the design documents in the light of the May review; the ICD has been reconstituted and circulated amongst the management and CASU. Some issues regarding the formalities (e.g. naming, numbering, format etc.) are being resolved well in advance of the April 15th deadline for issue for the review. JMS noted that it would be a good idea to have as much detailed design documented as possible to obviate the need for further reviews in the medium term. PMW and NCH have drafted the Q1'05 work plan and circulated this at the meeting. Small changes to the top-level priorities and changes requested at the last VDMT are being incorporated into the project plans by PMW. PMW and NCH noted that the next VDUC meeting is scheduled for Monday Feb 21st. VDUC chair Tim Naylor has requested and archive update from NCH. The meeting is to be held in Edinburgh; NCH noted that it would be good to demonstrate browsing of real WFCAM data in the archive. NCH noted that a draft note on UKIDSS data access policies has been received from JAC; it is currently circulating amongst interested parties on the Board and within UKIDSS. NCH will keep the team posted on developments and liaise with JAC on the details; in the meantime, the web page containing the report is linked from the TWiki. WFCAM update: NCH reported on the WFCAM commissioning update received from JAC via UKIDSS. This has been placed on the TWiki, but the important summary of next phase (re)commissioning is as follows: "WFCAM goes back on the telescope at the end of February. At present, there are two possible recommissioning scenarios, detailed below. Autoguider performance will be worked on in advance of and during this period. (i) internal adjustments ok, carry straight on through into observing. In this case the time identified as contingency (9-24 March) will be put to a mix of UKIDSS and PATT observing. (ii) internal adjustments need redoing; in this case the contingency time will be used up by a warmup/cooldown cycle and survey observations will not recommence until 29-Mar. WFCAM will remain on the telescope until 20-Jun-2005, and will be back on in mid-August for at least a four month period." Comments and issues arising from CASU fortnightly minutes: The team noted the minutes of the CASU meeting of 7/01/2005. NCH had queried the item under "comments on WFAU minutes", viz. "PSB noted the report from the 17th December meeting stating that the ATC-Cambridge networking setup was resolved." which nobody seems to understand at either end... Networking: ETWS has written material for inclusion in ACD's networking report; awaiting the final version from ACD for inclusion on the TWiki. Hardware: No news (is good news). Software: NCH & ETWS have been working on integrating the CASU pixel processing codes (stack/mosaic/difference-imaging/source-detection) into the archive curation system. NJC has started to look at generalised range checking on the ingest codes, and learning all about the CU code infrastructure generally. NCH, ETWS and NJC met last week on Fri PM to discuss the prioritisation of the remaining CU software for VDFS V2 & V3 with regard to assigning work over the next quarter. The items discussed were as follows: Priority # What CU V Rel. Abs. 1 Range checking on ingest codes 2-4 1 v.hi 1 2 Refactor source association using plane sweep 16 1 lo 4 3 Photometric recalibration 8 1 hi 2 4 Spatial indices for newly derived co-ords 6 3 v.lo 11 5 List-driven photometry (intra-WFCAM) 9 2 hi 3 6 Compute/update proper motions 10 3 lo 9 7 Recalibrate astrometry 11 3 lo 10 8 Integrate general large external catalogues 12 1 v.lo 7 9 Automatic invocation of CU6-9 15 1 med. 5 10 List-driven photometry (general) 17 3 med. 8 11 Database indexation procedures 18 1 med. 6 Relative priority is within version; absolute priority gives the order in which the work will be carried out. ETWS has begun to install some new numerical Python modules to facilitate some of this work. SSA: No news this week. Astrogrid deployment: JDT noted that the PAL deployment seems to be pointing to the old DB server; MCH is looking into this. JDT also noted that there is a WFAU account on the local Astro-miniGrid on grendel; he has circulated details and is happy to help out with novice users. Finally, the AVO demonstration meeting takes place at Vilspa on the 25/26; the WFAU datacentre and PAL deployment will be again employed within the AG parts of this. Miscellaneous: NCH noted that registration is now open for NAM'05 and that there is an e-Science session on the first day (chaired by our Leader and Teacher). NCH asked the team to think about the possibility of a talk and/or roadshow demo for this meeting. ACTION: ALL to think about the possibility of NAM'05 presence (e.g. talk and/or demo).
